If you're a veteran living with a service-connected condition, you may be entitled to VA disability compensation, a monthly, tax-free payment to support your health and well-being.
But qualifying for these benefits can be complex. Here's what you need to know.
Who Qualifies?
To be eligible for VA disability benefits, you must:
Be a military veteran with an honorable or general discharge
Have a current disability connected to your military service
What Counts as a "Service-Connected" Disability?
In-service injuries or illnesses
Pre-existing conditions made worse by service
Post-service conditions related to service (e.g., PTSD, Agent Orange exposure)
The VA also maintains a list of presumptive conditions, which are assumed to be service-connected without requiring further proof.
Check the list here: 38 CFR Section 3.309(a)
What You Need to Prove:
A current diagnosis
An in-service event or exposure
A medical nexus (a doctor’s opinion linking the two)
How to File a Claim
Complete VA Form 21-526EZ: Download it here
Submit your claim online through VA.gov
Whether you're just getting started or appealing a denied claim, having knowledgeable support, such as a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) or accredited representative, can make the process much smoother.
